Cellulite is the name given to the "puckering" and "dimpling" of the skin - which is often called "orange peel". It occurs in the subcutaneous layer - the layer of fat under the skin. It is thought to be due to lifestyle and genetic factors.

The skin is attached to the deeper structures - the fascia - by fibrous structures called "septa". As the fat cells get bigger, they push upwards and cause the septa to tighten, thus causing the 'dimple' effect on the skin. As the cells get bigger it results in lack of blood circulation which causes stagnation of metabolic waste and can lead to fibrosis.

Treatments for cellulite such as creams, lotions and even liposuction remain largely unsuccessful because they only target the appearance of cellulite. It is finally understood that the 'orange peel' effect on the surface of the skin is a symptom of an underlying cause.
'Cellulite does not respond well to weight loss, exercise, creams or liposuction.'

There are numerous differences between men and women; one of these concerns the structure of the fat layer just under the skin. The septa (as discussed earlier) is formed of a vertical box-like structure in women. As for men, the septa is formed in a lattice-like structure, thus giving more support for the fat cells, resulting in none or less cellulite than in women

Endermology is the process of reduction of Cellulite by mechanical means - using certain processes, massage, rolling and manipulation of the tissues.

Endermology is a non surgical procedure which helps eliminate cellulite and assists in achieving visible improvement in body shape and skin tone. It is the first cellulite treatment that has been approved by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It was developed in the early 1980's by Louis-Paul Guitay (hence LPG EndermologieŽ ).

Initially it was used in the treatment of burns to prevent skin contraction and loosen scar tissue. It was noted that it improved the appearance of cellulite and became widely used in France and USA for aesthetic purposes.

On your first appointment you will receive a consultation where the condition of your cellulite will be discussed between you and your therapist. A program will be agreed to suit your own personal needs. A photograph will be taken.

During the treatment you will wear a specialized body stocking. This is to make it more comfortable and also to protect your modesty! The therapist carries out the treatment which involves a hand held massage head which delivers intermittent suction and rolling action to the area being treated. Each treatment will last approximately 35 minutes, at the rate of about 1 - 2 per week.

This is not a painful treatment and most people describe it as relaxing as a body massage. The quantity of treatments depends on each individual, however, we recommend that you have a minimum of 10 sessions in order to benefit fully. It is also an excellent compliment to liposuction.

This is not a permanent solution to reduction in cellulite, but after your initial course of treatments, you may find that a 'maintenance schedule' of monthly treatments is sufficient.

The septa attaches the skin to the fat cells and when it is out of shape due to genetic and lifestyle factors, it starts to bend sideways causing the dimple effect.

The rolling and sucking action of the machine work together to 'stretch' the septa back to an upright position and helps to restore skin's smoothness and fights the orange peel effect.

The action of the machine also promotes elimination of toxins which are present in the affected area.
